Celebrating The Longest Table

A hundred-plus neighbors.
One very long table.
One very wet street.
And one unforgettable day.
It poured, and poured, and somehow, West 68th Street just kept going! To everyone who planned, volunteered, donated, attended meetings, cooked, carried, schlepped, set up, cleaned up, problem-solved, got soaked — and, most importantly, showed up — our deepest THANK YOU.
The rain may have soaked the tables, the chairs, the street — and most of us — but it certainly didn’t dampen the spirit of the day. What began as an ambitious idea became something much bigger: neighbors coming together, sharing food, making new friends, and creating a real sense of community right here on our block. That happened because of all of you.
There was Manny (owner of Manny’s Bistro) singing New York, New York, neighbors singing along and waving white cloth napkins over their heads (generously donated by Carmen, owner of Il Violino), all beautifully accompanied by Sammy Buttons on the keyboard — a perfect moment of pure West 68th Street joy.
We are deeply grateful to every person who gave their time, energy, ideas, food, muscle, patience, good humor — our talented musicians — and perhaps a dry towel or two — to make the West 68th Street Longest Table such a success.
A special thank you to the building supers of West 68th Street, who generously loaned us garbage pails, and to Stephen Wise Free Synagogue for the canopies that gave us shelter from the downpour. Your behind-the-scenes help made all the difference.
We couldn’t have done it without you. And we wouldn’t have wanted to. With love, gratitude, and still slightly damp shoes,
Kathleen Casey & Patty Traub
