Supertall building construction continues to menace the future of Central Park and the surrounding communities. Right before our eyes, daylight has been and continues to be stolen from Upper Westside residents. The long term effects will be devastating for businesses and tourism and our way of life.
Refreshing as it is that collaboration with other community groups and elected representatives to address loopholes in New York's zoning regulations continues, your voice and support matters!
Chris Giordano and our neighbors at the West 64th thru 67th Streets Block Association have been aggressive with our local officials in identifying and petitioning for the removal and clearer definition of the loopholes in our present zoning code. These loopholes have allowed builders to take advantage of our community by constructing buildings with 40-50 foot high “dead space” for the sole purpose of achieving better views and increased asking prices.
This is significant! This matters! Get involved!
Please read the below notice from our advocate and friend Chris and follow the links to get up to speed on this issue . . .
Dear Neighbor,
We have entered the fifth month that Extell's 36 W. 66th Street construction site has been quiet. Word on the street and in the media is the glut in the luxury real estate market as well as legal and administrative challenges has created uncertainty for developers and their investors. Regardless, our neighborhood has a large hole in the middle of it, Congregation Habonim has been displaced, and Extell is not answering our requests for an update on their plans.
December 17 is the day we return to the Board of Standards and Appeals to resume the hearing at which Extell has been directed to address how it is using the mechanical space and the Department of Buildings explain its rationale for accepting the proposed usage. Click here to get caught up on the history of the challenge and Landmark West's work defending our community. Many floors of height in this out-of-context development is at stake at this hearing.
Please mark your calendars and prepare to join us at the BSA hearing.
When: December 17 at 10am
Where: BSA Hearing Room at 22 Reade Street
Our collaboration with other community groups and elected representatives to address loopholes in New York's zoning regulations continues. We encourage you take a look at the following:
